KoiTek Fluidized FilterFalls®
The KoiTek Fluidized FilterFalls utilizes the most advanced technology in biological filtration. This self-cleaning waterfall filter uses a combination of Kaldnes K1 filter media and diffused air to provide maximum biological filtration and oxygenation. This amazing waterfall filter will handle a feeding capacity of over 1/2 pound of food per day while ensuring the best possible water parameters. Because the Kaldnes K1 media is always in motion the process is self-cleaning and requires no maintenance. This allows the filter to reach optimum effectiveness without the disturbance of periodic maintenance, avoiding unnecessary loss of bacteria within the filter. As the Kaldnes media circulates in the basket, it causes old dead bacteria on the outside to be removed, making space for new younger heavier feeding bacteria to colonize. The inner surface of the filter media is protected and enables colonies of bacteria to mature. This combination of young and mature bacteria provides maximum denitrification.
How It Works
The K1 media is engineered in a wheel shape and is slightly positively buoyant. Water enters at the bottom side of the filter and flows up through the bottom of the filter media basket. A 9" membrane air diffuser at the bottom of the media basket mixes air bubbles with the water and the K1 media to produce a moving filter bed that circulates the media throughout the filter basket. The water flows out the slots in the top filter basket and over the FilterFalls spillway. Oxygen and fish waste give beneficial bacteria the means to grow, while the K1 media provides the maximum active surface area for the bacteria to colonize. This process removes harmful ammonia and nitrates from the water while oxygenating the water.
Maturing Process
Usually after a period of six weeks, beneficial bacteria will have colonized the Kaldnes filter media to a satisfactory level to deal with the waste produced by your fish. In cooler climates this can take longer. To speed up this process bacteria can be added directly to the waterfall filter. When mature the filter media will turn from a pure white in color to dark brown.
Matala 9" Membrane Diffuser Disc
The Matala 9" fine bubble membrane air diffuser included is made out of heavy duty EPDM rubber membrane fixed to a highly durable molded polypropylene base. The membrane has precision perforated slits that open when airflow is present and close when airflow is stopped. In this way slits resist tearing and stay cleaner longer. The Matala fine bubble membrane diffuser has a standard 3/4" MPT pipe thread that allows convenient connection. A 304 grade stainless steel clamping ring holds the membrane firmly in place.
Hakko 40L Air Pump
The Hakko 40L air pump included will deliver 2.1 CFM while only using 40 watts. Hakko air pumps are built to last with a very durable body and mechanics meaning years and years of everlasting quality airflow.
Very low noise 32/38 dB at 1 meter, low power consumption, silent operation, completely oil free, overload protection with auto off/on switch for overheat situations. UL and CE listed for outdoor use. Comes with a 3 year manufacturer warranty.
